CORNELIUS – Around 205 children enjoyed fishing, tubing, sliding and swimming July 18 during the 11th annual Big Day at the Lake.

The event, founded by Cornelius resident, Dave Yochum, with the help of his friends, neighbors and local businesses, benefits the non-profit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte that serves close to 250 children in North Mecklenburg annually.

Freedom Boat Club, located in the Waterstreet Seaport Marina in Cornelius, provided 13 boats with captains for Big Day at the Lake, including a double decker pontoon boat with slides.

“We’ve been looking for a community service to get behind since opening FBC in 2013. The Big Day at the Lake event is the perfect venue,” said Jeff Weir, FBC owner. “Creating happy memories is what this day is about. We will definitely be participating again next year and every year.”

The day concluded with a picnic and fun activities for more than 600 participants at the Duke Energy Energy Explorium.

Big Day at the Lake is designed to share a fun day at the lake with at-risk children who would normally not have the opportunity to experience Lake Norman and Mountain Island Lake.
