Freedom Boat Club Names New Boat After Oil Spill Survivor

A Florida Freedom Boat Club franchise named a boat in honor of a golden retriever that nearly died in the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Buddy Boy barely survived after taking an “unauthorized swim” in the Gulf and being exposed to the powerful solvent that was used to break up the oil.

“This dog is special. He shares my love for water and boats, as well as for people. Everyone who meets him quickly falls in love with him,” Lisa Almeida, owner of the Freedom Boat Club Jacksonville and St. Augustine franchise, said in a statement.

Almeida and members of her staff will christen a new 20-foot Hurricane deckboat on April 15 at the Southeast U.S. Boat Show in Jacksonville. Buddy Boy’s Toy is the 44th boat in the fleet.

“I have never owned a dog, but after getting to know Buddy Boy, who belongs to my fiancé, Riley, I have a new perspective,” Almeida said.
