Hanover Resident Wins 40 Under 40 Award

He may only be knocking 30, but Hanover resident Matt O’Connor has already accomplished more than many twice his age. The 29-year-old was recently picked as one of Cape & Plymouth Business magazines 40 Under 40 Awards for his success as a co-owner of several Freedom Boat Club franchises.

Cape & Plymouth Business’ 40 Under 40 Awards spotlight the region’s top young business leaders who excel in their industry and show dynamic leadership. O’Connor and his business partner, Matt Carrick, who was also honored with a 40 Under 40 Award last year, owns one of the largest Freedom Boat franchises in the country with nine locations from Boston to Cape Cod.

O’Connor said his franchise has 100 boats and nearly 700 members. They have locations in Danvers, Boston, Quincy, Hingham, Scituate, Falmouth, East Dennis, West Dennis, and Chatham. “We are young and we are driven and we want to see this business succeed,” he said. “I think we do a good job managing and we are always making sure the customers feel comfortable, and super safe on our boats.” Freedom Boat Club members pay a one-time joiners’ fee and monthly dues for access to a fleet of hundreds of boats across the country.

Members can take the boats out at any of the company’s locations, but they do not have to deal with the hassles of boat ownership such as cleaning, maintenance, and storage. “People often say the best days of a boat owner’s life is the day he buys the boat and the day he sells it,” O’Connor said. “With the Freedom Boat Club, members can take the boats out for the day and have fun with their family and friends and then simply bring it back and don’t have to deal with cleaning it or what happens when something breaks.”

O’Connor said there are many businesses that operate with a similar shared-ownership concept from clothing websites to jets and small aircraft services. “I think the shared-ownership concept has caught on, especially with people in our age bracket, 25-40,” he said. “It’s like Netflix or ZipCar. I often refer to it as the ZipCar of boating.” O’Connor, a Duxbury native who now lives in Hanover with his expecting wife, started out with Freedom Boat Club eight years ago as a summer employee.

At the time, he was going to U-Mass Amherst with the intentions of one day becoming an attorney. Over the years O’Connor moved up the ladder and eventually decided to get into the business as an owner.
