Cost comparison greatly favors boat club vs. boat ownership

We had been boat shopping for several years, comparing the cost of purchase vs. boat club membership.  The cost comparison was greatly in favor of boat club membership and no hassles.

We heard about the grand opening of the Freedom Boat Club in Annapolis and decided to check it out.  We were still undecided until we met General Manager, Dan Somerville.  Dan is a true professional, extremely knowledgeable and an absolute pleasure to deal with.

He made everything easy.  Thanks, Dan!

Five star boating experience.

Freedom Boat Club is a five star boating experience. We have access to four new outstanding boats for the price of what it cost to rent a boat slip. We can use the boats to go fishing, participate in water sports or to explore the Chesapeake. We enjoy the beauty of the islands, rivers and streams that are a part of the Chesapeake. We love docking at St. Michaels for lunch after exploring the Eastern Bay.  Dan has been great support teaching us how to maneuver a boat on the Chesapeake and always having the boat in pristine condition before we take it out on the bay.   Freedom boat club is for us!

Freedom Boat Club was a perfect choice for us.

Freedom Boat Club (FBC) was a perfect choice for us.  As a recently retired couple, we were not sure how much boating would fit into our, as yet undefined, new lifestyles. Multi-year commitments were out of the question. Overall cost, types of boats, condition of the fleet, and convenience of access were factors, as well.   We compared the option of purchasing a boat with joining a boat club, and we compared the boat clubs in the Baltimore/Annapolis area.

We wanted use of a boat that the 2 of us could comfortably handle, but could carry 8 to 10 safely (grandkids, friends, etc.). Shallow draft so we could explore rivers and the Bay was important.  Most importantly, we wanted the boat to serve two purposes, as a comfortable and well-equipped fishing boat, and also a comfortable and well-equipped family day cruiser.  Boats in the 22' to 27' class seemed to best match these requirements.

Comparing boat purchase with boat clubs, the boat clubs were far more cost effective for us.  FBC's monthly fee is at or less than monthly purchase costs for a comparable boat. In addition, purchasing a boat would have additional costs for dock fees, repairs, maintenance, cleaning costs, insurance, and other expenses that FBC includes in its monthly fee at no additional cost.  Lastly, we avoid the time commitments for cleaning and maintenance that a boat club handles for us.

FBC was our preferred choice when compared to other boat clubs in the area:

FBC's water location is outstanding, right at the mouth of the Severn River in Back Creek. We are less than 10 minutes from the Annapolis docks and the incredible homes on the Severn, 5 minutes from fishing on the Chesapeake Bay, and 15-20 minutes from the Bay Bridge.

FBC's land location is easily accessible from I-75, MD-32, US 50 & 450. The marina is in Annapolis, but avoids the heavy traffic in and around the downtown area.

All of the FBC boats are modern and in excellent (virtually pristine) condition with all the requisite safety features, such as 2-way radios and lifesaving equipment.

All of FBC's boats are in the 22'-27' foot range: half are fully equipped center-console fishing boats, with GPS, depth & fish finders; and the other half of the fleet are deck boats with GPS, depth finders, and comfortable seats for 8 to 10, perfect for day cruising.  Other boat clubs either would have had us subsidizing the use of larger boats in their fleets, or made us feel like second class citizens with fewer privileges because of our preference for smaller boats.

The training program at FBC was wonderful.  A no-stress, fun experience that made both of us feel comfortable and safe, as well as ensuring our proficiency with boats, equipment, regulations, navigation, safety procedures, including the practical skills and tips that make our boating experiences fun.

Membership in FBC gives us access to the facilities at Port Annapolis Marina, including a restaurant, snack bar, and a swimming pool that our grandkids love after a day on the water.

Most importantly, Dan's management and concierge services are more than we expected or hoped for – warm, friendly, and efficient – he makes every outing a terrific experience for us, our family, and our friends. We always leave the marina eager to return for our next adventure

Given our mid-Atlantic coast location, we enjoy a long boating season from April 1st to November 30th; and, we always have the option of winter boating in warmer waters using FBC's system-wide privileges to access boats from the other 25 clubs that dot the southeastern, Florida, and Gulf coasts. This year, we're planning a February boating/fishing vacation in Florida at several Gulf coast FBC locations.

Did I mention: no cleaning or maintenance!

Great boat availability, great facilities, right choice.

FBC was the right choice for our family. Great facilities. Honest staff.  All the boat availability we need.  We've had irreplaceable memories.
