Stratford, founded by the Puritans in 1639, is bordered on the west by Bridgeport, to the north by Trumbull and Shelton, and on the east by Milford (across the Housatonic River). Known for its shipbuilding history, Stratford has been home to shipyard activity, of one sort or another, since the 1700s. During the mid 1800s, Stratford was the building site for many large schooners, most notably the 280-ton Helen Mar. In later years, the town developed an aviation association, becoming the birthplace of the American helicopter industry, after Igor Sikorsky successfully flew the first helicopter at a Stratford-based aircraft plant.
