Fishing Spots

Guana River State Park

The Guana River State Park is officially designated as part of Florida's Statewide System of Greenways and Trails. A 1592 account by a Spanish historian has led present day historians to believe that Guana River was the site of Ponce de Leon's first landing in Florida. Its precise location is unknown. Nonetheless, this park offers history, beautiful coastal ecosytems and pleasurable trail experiences. Only a few miles from St. Augustine, the park also provides great Atlantic Ocean swimming and surf fishing as well as some freshwater lake fishing. The unpaved trails are excellent and are enjoyed by all levels of riders and hikers.

Ponce de Leon landed here in 1513 in search of the "Fountain of Youth." Largemouth bass and bream are available in the same waterways that support red drum and spotted seatrout. Off the coast of Jacksonville you'll find king mackerel, black sea bass, amberjack, cobia, Spanish mackerel and barracuda. Tarpon and trophy red drum are found near-shore around inlets, channels , beaches and buoys. The area is home to the annual Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament.

Landmarks

Fernandina Beach

Amelia Island's Fernandina Beach brings to mind a more graceful bygone era. Recently named one of the top 12 vacation destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, it is a community that cherishes and preserves it past.

Ft. George Island State Park

Native Americans feasted here, colonists built a fort, and the Smart Set of the 1920s came for vacations. A site of human occupation for over 5,000 years, Fort George Island was named for a 1736 fort built to defend the southern flank of Georgia when it was a colony. Today´s visitors come for boating, fishing, off-road bicycling, and hiking. A key attraction is the recently restored Ribault Club. Once an exclusive resort, it is now a visitor center with meeting space available for special functions. Behind the club, small boats, canoes, and kayaks can be launched on the tidal waters.

Fishing

Members can explore the St. Johns River or take a day an head offshore for a greater challenge.  Inshore fishing the St. Johns River, and estuaries around Jacksonville and Amelia Island, Florida provides year round opportunities for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead to name just a few.

The legendary Mayport Jetties are mile long piles of huge granite boulders that protect the inlet to the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean. Around these jetties is some of the best and most consistent fishing for many of our inshore and ocean species.
