Scents for Soldiers
By Jim Hulen, North Myrtle Beach Online.comJULY 9, 2010 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Rooms on the beach and a boat on the waterway awaited four veterans that Scents for Soldiers brought to the Grand Strand for a Fourth of July vacation.
Christina Shealey said, "Scents for Soldiers is a Non-Profit Organization. Members of the Grand Strand community specifically created Scents for Soldiers to help provide a relaxing and warm environment for wounded Soldiers while they heal. We have raised enough money to bring some of them down on vacation from Walter Reed (Army Medical Hospital) Sgt James Nicholson, First Sgt Carlos Martinis, and Ryan Cirignano, Navy veteran, were veterans of either the Afghanistan, Iraq or the Gulf Wars and had sustained harm from their service to their country. All were either recuperating from injuries, awaiting additional surgeries or a long time veteran.
They were very excited to describe their North Myrtle Beach adventure and how they got here.
Nicholson said, "I got a call from Martinis. He asked if I wanted to go to Myrtle Beach - they were doing a lot of cool stuff." The cool stuff they were doing was ocean fishing and jet skiing one day and a trip to Bird Island over their two-day stay. Nicholson saw action in Iraq that resulted in injuries from an IAD- injuries to his back and leg resulting in further multiple fractures to his leg, a tibia broken in five places, and a crushed ankle socket. He has undergone six surgeries at Walter Reed and has four more to go.
Of the vacation at North Myrtle Beach, Nicholson said," I spend of idle time in-between surgeries and this is an awesome way to enjoy the time. Its relaxing."
Over 23 years of service, First Sgt Carlos Martinis has seen action in just about every theater in the middle east.
Freedom Boat Club of North Myrtle Beach provided the boats for the wounded wariors "Additionally," said Shealey, "Freedom Boat Club has donated a six month trial membership to raffle for us to raise additional money. We draw on September 4."
Scents for Soldiers got its name from an original intent to bring the smells of home to hospitalized soldiers - like pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving.
