Just wanted to drop you a note and let you know how it went.
First, please thank Captain Don for not only training me, but also recommending the charts and book on cruising the keys. I bought them both when I got home and they were very helpful. I was prepared for sea grass and the hefty fines that go with damaging it and the shallow waters that make it near impossible to avoid. No dropping anchor.
There was a small craft advisory for our first reservation so it was cancelled, but it was lifted by Thursday. Still very windy which added to heavy currents in the channel, but I brought it in for fueling and back home without beating up the boat at all. Definitely a confidence booster. Finally - best part of the boat club - our boat was thoroughly prepared for the US Coast Guard safety inspection we had while we were out. Your standard checklist ensured I knew where everything was and that all was up to code.
The dockmaster down there - Greg - is a great guy and I gave Allison a scare in reservations when I couldn't find the one Jeff had emailed me, but she was very helpful and sent me everything I needed. I really couldn't be happier with this membership.
There is only one thing I would suggest and Allison might be the one that needs this. Islamorada club is in a great location, but members should maybe be warned that "Smugglers Cove Resort" is not a resort. It's a motel. It has the advantage of walking out a door and being right in front of the boat slip. The people there are very friendly and even though it was run down, it was clean. But, that's it. In fact, there is no phone in the room and from 9pm-10am there is no one on the property. So have a charged cell phone handy because if you need an ambulance in the middle of the night you are on your own.
Again, thank you all. It was wonderful! Stevie L
