Boating Requirements

Freedom Boat Club requires all operators of its boats to be be members of the Club. Members are welcome to bring aboard guests to enjoy the fun of boating but only members are authorized to operate boats. Members of Freedom Boat Club must be 21 years of age or older.

For eligible Freedom Boat Club members, New York State currently has no requirement for certification. However Suffolk County on Long Island recently passed legislation requiring all boat operators to attend and pass a certified boater safety course. This legislation is currently slated to take effect at the end of October 2013. All members of Freedom Boat Club are strongly encouraged to take the boater safety course and to hold in possession at all time the boater safety card issued to attendees upon successful completion of the course. This is a classroom based course and does not involve on-the-water training with an operating boat.

As part of Freedom Boat Club membership, and at no additional charge, all members receive a boater orientation course given by a skilled boating instructor. This on-the-water training and orientation is a requirement before independently operating boats. For experienced boaters this session is typically 3 to 4 hours and goes over specific Freedom Boat Club procedures as well as provides and opportunity to learn about the handling characteristics of Freedom Boat Club\'s boats. For novice or brand new boaters, several sessions may be provided (at no charge) to the members to ensure they are safe and competent boaters who can fully enjoy the fun of operating a powerboat. Refresher training is also provided upon request to all members at no charge.
