Safe Boating Week: What It Is and Why It Matters

As the weather warms up and boaters eagerly head back to the water, there’s no better time to focus on safety than National Safe Boating Week — an annual reminder that fun on the water starts with staying safe.

When Is Safe Boating Week 2025?

This year, National Safe Boating Week runs from May 17-23, 2025. The event is held each year during the week leading up to Memorial Day Weekend, a time when waterways across the country see a big seasonal surge in activity.

What Is Safe Boating Week?

Safe Boating Week is a nationwide campaign led by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) with support from the U.S. Coast Guard and various other boating organizations. This week-long period is dedicated to raising awareness about boating safety practices — from wearing life jackets to understanding navigation rules, weather preparedness, and sober boating.

The campaign encourages boaters of all experience levels to review essential safety guidelines and make smart choices on the water. It’s a timely, proactive push to reduce on-water accidents and protect lives before the summer boating season officially kicks off.

Why Boating Safety Is So Important

Every year, boating accidents result in injuries, fatalities, and property damage — many of which are preventable. According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s 2023 Recreational Boating Statistics report:

• Where cause of death was known, 75% of fatal boating accidents involved drowning – and over 87% of those victims were not wearing a life jacket.

• The top contributing factors to vessel accidents include operator inattention, inexperience, improper lookout, machinery failure, and substance use such as alcohol and drugs.

Safe Boating Week is a reminder that boating safety isn’t just about knowing the rules — it’s about creating habits that protect you, your passengers, and other boaters on the water.

How Freedom Boat Club Prioritizes Safe Boating

At Freedom Boat Club, safety is a core value and at the foundation of everything we do. As the world’s largest boating club, with more than 400 locations and 90,000+ members, we’re committed to making the water accessible and safe for everyone — whether you're a first-time boater or whether you have a strong boating background.

In 2024, Freedom Boat Club was recognized with the Top Marine Business award from the Sea Tow Foundation National Boating Safety Awards for our Member Safety Orientation and Comprehensive Training Program. This program combines face-to-face interactions at new member orientations and dock briefings with digital training and communications, delivering safety information and instruction to boaters.

Here’s more about how we lead with safety:

• Comprehensive New Member Orientation

• Every new member participates in an in-depth, in-person safety orientation and on-water training session. We cover everything from basic boat operation and docking techniques to safety gear checks, channel markers, and emergency procedures.

• On-Going Safety Education with Unlimited Member Training

• Members have access to unlimited on-water training sessions and additional resources to hone their skills and stay current on best practices. These training opportunities and resources are free to all members throughout the lifetime of their membership.

• Well-Maintained, Safety-Equipped Fleet

• Our boats are regularly maintained, and each is equipped with United States Coast Guard-approved safety equipment — including life jackets, fire extinguishers, and signaling devices — so members can leave the dock with the confidence of knowing that they have what they need to boat safely.

• Dedicated Dock Staff and Briefings

• Our dock teams conduct thorough pre-departure briefings and float plans, offering real-time local safety updates, weather forecast advisories, and navigational tips before each trip.

• Partnerships with Industry Leaders

• Freedom Boat Club partners with respected organizations like BoatClass, NASBLA, and the National Safe Boating Council to support safety initiatives and continuously improve our training programs.
