The Perfect Lake Lanier Boating Itinerary

Lake Lanier is the largest lake in Georgia, nestled in the rolling foothills of the state’s northern region. This impressive body of water boasts over 700 miles of shoreline and 38,000 acres of water. The lake was created in 1956 when the Buford Dam transformed the Chestatee and Chattahoochee rivers into a massive lake.

It's a family-friendly area with plenty of inland campgrounds and cabins available for rent. In addition to scenic views and pristine waters, the lake provides many recreational activities that tourists and locals alike can enjoy. Lake Lanier is a dream destination for boaters everywhere. And to help make the most of your trip, we’ve created a detailed 3-day itinerary designed to provide the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.

Day 1: Relax & Explore the Lanier Islands

Morning

Kick-off your Lake Lanier boat trip by departing out of one of its 3 main marinas. Freedom Boat Club members are able to reserve a boat at Holiday Marina, Aqualand Club, Bald Ridge Marina, and Gainesville Marina. It will be waiting for you in the slip upon arrival. We recommend reserving a pontoon boat because it's the perfect vessel for lake exploration. The lake is also well renowned for fishing, so we have plenty of fishing vessels available to reserve as you venture out in search of striped bass.

From there, set off on a cruise around the Lake Lanier Islands and enjoy a peaceful morning surrounded by nature. We recommend dropping an anchor at Sunrise Cove because to enjoy your morning coffee or a relaxing picnic breakfast.

Afternoon

When finished exploring from the water, you can make your way to Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. This waterfront attraction is the perfect spot to dock for lunch. Step off the boat and into a lively atmosphere. Here you can relax and enjoy tropical-themed cuisine and sip on a refreshing beverage. You can easily spend the rest of the afternoon soaking up the sun at LandShark Landing Beach. But, if the family is up for adventure, you can visit the waterpark or rent a kayak.

If Margaritaville isn’t what you are looking for, head over to any of the other marina on the lake for more dining options. A few of our recommendations include SmokeyQ at Bald Ridge Marina, Pigtales at Aqualand Marina, and Twisted Oar at Holiday Marina. All of these dining options include courtesy docks so you can tie up the boat and head directly into the restaurant for great meal.

Day 2: Water Sports & Adventure

Morning

We hope you’re ready to get your adrenaline pumping after a relaxing first day! Pack a tow rope and a board or tube before hopping in the boat and heading back towards the Lanier Islands. The calm waters that surround the islands are ideal for tubing, wakeboarding, and waterskiing. It's a suitable environment for all skill levels.

Watersports can add excitement to your outing, but it's important to know how to operate a boat safely when towing passengers. Be sure to adhere to the lake's channel markers and buoys. And for more watersport safety tips, check out our recent blog

Afternoon

After an action-packed morning, we recommend taking things down a notch and traveling towards the northern part of the lake to explore waters less traveled. That’s where you’ll find hidden coves such as Two Mile Creek and Big Creek, where you can anchor to swim or fish. If you’re itching to explore on land, stop at Six Mile Creek Park and discover a sandy, lakeside beach perfect for an afternoon picnic or shoreline stroll.

Day 3: Lake Lanier Sightseeing & Cruising

Morning

On your last day at Lake Lanier, consider taking a morning cruise towards the southern end of the lake. There you can find the Buford Dam, which offers panoramic views of the area. It’s also a great place to learn about the history and creation of Lake Lanier.

Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture it all! If you’re interested in wildlife, you may be able to snap some photos of birds and other animals along the shore.

Afternoon

Your Lake Lanier adventure is coming to a close, so let’s to end it right. It’s time to head to the famous boating hangout, Cocktail Cove. This destination brings all the good vibes and is the perfect place to spend your last few hours on the lake. Set an anchor, turn up the music, and enjoy a laid-back afternoon. Now's your chance to soak up the surrounding beauty one last time before heading back to shore to watch the sun set over the water.

Bonus Boat Trip Tips

1. Check the Weather in Gainesville

While the weather down south is usually warm, we recommend checking the forecast before heading out on the boat each day. The wide-open waters of Lake Lanier can get quite choppy in inclement weather.

2. Pack the Essentials

When spending a full day out on the water, be sure to pack sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, floats, drinking water, and any other essentials you'll need to have a safe and enjoyable day out on the water. You may even want to bring a spare set of dry clothes in case you get wet.

3. Secure a Boat at Your Desired Marina

If you’re a member of Freedom Boat Club, make reservations in advance to secure your preferred vessel each day. If you’re not a member, you will need to find another way of securing a boat for the duration of your trip, such as a boat rental. Click here to learn more about Freedom Boat Club membership. With us there's no need to worry about boat storage or having to use a boat ramp to get on the lake.

With a stunning landscape and many opportunities for adventure, it’s no wonder why Georgia’s most popular lake is the perfect setting for a multi-day boat trip. From exploration to relaxation, this 3-day itinerary is sure to have something that everyone in the family will enjoy!
